Why Dehydrate Food – What Are the Benefits of Food Dehydration?
Food dehydration has become very popular over the years. A long time ago it was popular just because it was one of the only reliable ways to preserve foods for long periods of time. More recently it has become popular just because dehydrated food can make tasty treats that are also very healthy. Making delicious, healthy snacks and preserving food is what it all boils down to, that is why people dehydrate food but let’s take a closer look at some of the reasons people dehydrate food in a little bit more detail.
One reason that people dehydrate food is simply to save money. If you like to buy jerky at the grocery store you probably realize that it is pretty expensive and it is quite a bit cheaper if you make your own at home. Making your own homemade jerky also allows you to try a number of different recipes and come up with flavors that just aren’t available in grocery stores.
Dehydrated fruit slices are also a very popular snack. Dehydrated fruit has a very sweet, very intense flavor that a lot of people describe as tasting like candy. However it is much more healthy than buying processed foods from the grocery store. Dehydrated fruit retains all of the vitamins and nutrients that a fresh piece of fruit picked right from the tree has.
Dehydrated food is also popular with hikers, campers and backpackers. Not only are the snacks healthy and tasty but they are also very lightweight. If you are backpacking or hiking you can carry a lot of food in your pack without adding a lot of weight that you have to carry around.
Another great reason for dehydrating food is to take advantage of all of the food produced in your garden (if you have one). If you grow your own food at home it is often difficult to use all of the food that your garden produces. However, by dehydrating the food it can be stored for very long periods of time so you can utilize all of the food you grow in your garden without wasting it. Even if you don’t have a garden you can buy fruits and vegetables locally when they are in season (and therefore less expensive) and store them for later use. Stock up on things that are in season and you can save quite a bit of money.
Another way to save money with Steve dehydration is by trying your own herbs and spices at home. Dried herbs and spices are very expensive in the grocery store but if you dry your own parsley, basil, oregano and other herbs you would be surprised at how much money you could save.
As you can see there are quite a few good reasons for dehydrating food and I feel that we are just scratching the surface with some of the reasons we touched on. There are probably many more good reasons for dehydrating food that you could come up with but hopefully we’ve given you an idea of some of the many benefits of food dehydration.
