Coleman RoadTrip LXE Propane Grill Review

Coleman RoadTrip LXE Propane Grill
Estimated Lowest Price

For those who like to take their gas grill with them when tailgating or camping, the Coleman RoadTrip LXE Propane Grill has a lot to offer. This portable gas grill also makes an excellent choice for those who do not have room for a full-size freestanding grill or perhaps only grill occasionally. One of the biggest advantages of this 10,000 BTU gas grill is that it can be completely folded up into an easy to manage, fully portable unit that does not take up much in the way of space.

In the Box

Inside the box, buyers will find that the Coleman RoadTrip LXE Propane Grill comes almost completely assembled. This is becoming the standard for most portable grills as it helps to ensure they are ready to use with very little effort and in as little as 15 minutes. The complete list of included parts and accessories includes:

  • Complete grill assembly and stand
  • 2 Wheels
  • Handle
  • Regulator
  • Hardware bag
  • Complete instruction and assembly manual

For those who are used to spending hours putting a grill together, the Coleman RoadTrip LXE should come as a nice surprise. All there is to do is attach the wheels, handle, and regulator and the RoadTrip is ready to use as soon as a source of propane is attached. Although the Coleman RoadTrip LXE is designed to be used with readily available disposable one pound propane canisters, a separate adaptor hose is available that can be used to attach a 20 pound or larger propane tank.

First Impressions

Straight out of the box, the Coleman RoadTrip LXE appears to be well made from top quality parts. Initial setup requires no more than adding the wheels and handle. By placing a foot on the leg and pulling on the handle, the RoadTrip is easily raised into operating position. Although the RoadTrip is considered to be a “portable” grill, names can often be slightly deceptive. This grill features a full 285 square inches of ready to use cooking area.

The wheels make it easy to move the Coleman RoadTrip around, unlike many others which must be carried. While this may not seem like a major issue, when the grill must be carried for a long distance to where it is to be used, this suddenly becomes a very good idea. Along with wheels and a tow handle, the RoadTrip is loaded with several other great features including:

  • 2 x 10,000 BTU burners
  • InstaStart® Electronic Ignition
  • Porcelain coated, cast iron grills
  • Detachable side tables
  • PerfectFlow® heat control system
  • Tool holders
  • Removable grease tray

Cooking Performance

When it comes to cooking performance, the Coleman RoadTrip LXE Propane Grill has a lot to offer. The RoadTrip offers twin fully variable heat controls, one for each burner, that are marked from low to high. However with a maximum total output of 20,000 BTUs, most users will never need to set the burners to the high position. The twin burners can provide more than enough heat at lower settings for most dishes.

Setting both burners on medium is more than sufficient for preheating with the lid closed. In fact when preheated in this manner the RoadTrip should be ready to cook most foods in approximately 10 minutes. Users should be aware that leaving the grill set on high may melt the handles and cause the paint to blister. Although the lid is made of thick steel, this type of excessive heat may cause it to warp.

For foods that may need to be cooked using the high setting on most other grills, using medium on the RoadTrip should be more than sufficient, anything higher may result in burnt food. In most cases using a setting between low and medium should be plenty and will reduce the amount of gas needed. A standard one pound disposable cylinder should last between two and four hours. Due to the unique shape and heavy lid, cooking times in the Coleman RoadTrip LXE Propane Grill tend to be less than those which are experienced with many bigger freestanding grills.

The Coleman RoadTrip LXE Propane Grill is an excellent choice for those looking for a portable “go anywhere” type of gas grill. The wheels and tow handle make it easy to transport over a wide range of terrains and the compact size make transporting the RoadTrip simple in most vehicles. Evenly distributed heat and porcelain coated, cast iron grills make cooking and clean up easy. The RoadTrip is offers exceptional value at an affordable price.

This grill rates high on Amazon with customers loving the overall design and quality of the grill. Most customers love the ease with which the grill can be folded up and how little space it takes when collapsed. The grill is perfect for tailgating and camping where a tabletop grill might not work. Customers love how evenly the grill cooks and state that it is easy to clean up. However the grill does have a couple of design flaws that a few customers have discovered. The tin cup used for grease is not as heavy duty as the rest of the grill and a bit small, and a few customers have reported that it has melted during flare ups. Also several customers do not like the fact that you cannot close the lid on this grill while cooking. Overall most customers were very happy with their Coleman grill and if you are looking for a grill take with you on the go this grill is the perfect grill for the job.
