Whenever a major appliance breaks down it can present you with a major problem. Not only is it very expensive to replace a refrigerator, it is not easy to live without a refrigerator for very long. Not only will you have to replace the refrigerator itself but you may also have to replace a lot of food that goes bad if your refrigerator were to stop working. The best way to avoid that type of thing is to prevent it from ever happening in the first place which is why I would like to offer up some tips for cleaning and maintaining your refrigerator.
Keeping your refrigerator clean and properly maintained will not only help it last longer but it will also help you save money and electricity because it will run more efficiently if it is maintained properly. One thing that will not need to be done very often but should be done maybe once or twice a year is to clean the coils on the back of the refrigerator. Dust and grime can accumulate here and your refrigerator will have to work harder if the coils are very dirty. It’s also good idea to clean out any dust that accumulates underneath your refrigerator. A microfiber duster with a long handle or brush will help you get to those hard to reach areas.
Another part of your refrigerator that you should keep clean is the gasket that forms a seal between the door and the refrigerator itself. Keeping the gasket clean is very easy to do and it is also very important so that your refrigerator can maintain an airtight seal. All you need to do is wipe it down with a damp cloth occasionally.
It’s also a good idea to defrost your freezer now and then. Not only can a buildup of ice reduce the amount of storage space you have in your freezer but it can also cause blockages that can damage your freezer. It’s not a good idea to use a knife or an ice pick because it is dangerous and it could damage your freezer. It’s better to just unplug the refrigerator and allow your freezer to thaw on its own. You could even use a hair dryer to accelerate the process.
Keeping your refrigerator and freezer clean is also very important. Thoroughly cleaning your refrigerator is easy enough to do. You’ll need to take out all of the food in the refrigerator and you can use paper towels and cleanser to wipe down the inside of the refrigerator. You could also use a clean rag with a mixture of hot water and dish soap. For any stubborn, stuck on grime you can use a little bit of baking soda because it acts both as a mild abrasive and is very absorbent.
Properly cleaning and maintaining your refrigerator is not very difficult at all. It doesn’t even need to be done very often but it is important to do the things mentioned above occasionally. Keeping things clean and properly maintained will ensure that your refrigerator runs properly and efficiently for as long as possible.
